Sarah, 2020-

Sarah is a series of autobiographical photographs based on unfamiliar struggles and misconstrued hardships experienced by an adopted queer single mother. As an individual raised in a southern, Christian household and as someone who attended a Catholic school for many years, I found it nearly impossible to be accepted when so many of my identity traits were in line with the word “sin”. Due to Christianity’s heavy influence in the South and its leaning towards a heteronormative, “Pro-Life” mindset, the negative impacts of adoption on numerous children throughout the country are left unheard. Now, as a single mother whose only blood relative is my daughter, this personal body of work explores the bonds I have to various aspects of what American society defines as a normal family. Sarah is a body of work that visually investigates an intimate connection with fleeting time, memory, motherhood, and a uniquely repressive sense of otherness.
